ANNA BIRCH
Artist

Anna Birch was born in Moscow in 1989. She graduated from Moscow State University in 2012, and then completed her art education at the British Higher School of Design (specialty in Contemporary Art) and the MMOMA's "Free Workshops".

Many years of working in the media and publishing business have affected her adherence to logocentricity in her projects and newsfeed research and analysis. The main themes are the interaction of different social groups with each other via print and online media, collective memory, and self-identity. Through irony and grotesque, she plays with the duality and contradictory of some meanings that are typical for Russian reality nowadays and also refers to some taboo topics.

She experiments with presentation and disclosure through painting and ceramics, as well as through assemblage and collage she reveals the total fragmentariness of the contemporary digitized world. She has participated in a variety of group exhibitions of young artists. Lives and works in Moscow and Nice.

Artistic statement

The core leitmotif of my artistic practice is research into the social systems' bifurcation points. This is an analytical study of country, family, lineage, society, and world history. It lets me look at history as a series of events that have value for us today as an experience. I review these phenomena through the lens of time, cyclicity, collective memory, and self identity.

I work with citations that I take from the news feed. The contrasting fixation of these quotes creates a space where the words and images interplay and create new connotations. The logocentricity of my practice stems largely from my background as a media publisher. My art practice is the result of my search for a balance between content and form, between the abstract and the concrete.

I use different techniques to suit each case. I work with painting, graphics, photography, and ceramics. It allows me to go deeper into the subject and find the most effective and interesting methods and techniques to represent a particular subject. My works are almost always related to a current agenda, but they are not provocative, but rather provide viewers an occasion to reflect and ponder on.
