The project Of a Different Kind includes series of assemblages consisting of paintings, neon strips, and embroidery. Each series explores, in its own way, the project's overarching theme — sociocultural phenomena in post-Soviet reality. As a means of artistic expression, I use quotations from memes, social media posts, classical Russian literature, and folklore.
In this project, I play with the meanings of well-known and popular phrases and quotations from the everyday life of ordinary Russians, which, in the context of the present day, sometimes acquire entirely different meanings. I select subjects for my paintings that help reveal the essence of the statements and evoke associations with familiar landscapes, home, and existential themes.
The project examines the interaction between the cultural memory and contemporary history, seeking to identify points of bifurcation in modern Russian society.
